I'm Emily D. Bretz, a dedicated family and estate planning attorney with a passion for helping people through some of life's most challenging times. My journey in law began in criminal defense, but after witnessing a friend's difficult divorce, I realized my true calling was in family law and estate planning. These areas allow me to provide personalized solutions tailored to each client's unique needs and circumstances.

I bring over ten years of litigation experience to my practice, having worked extensively in both criminal defense and family law. My trial experience equips me to provide a well-rounded and comprehensive approach to every case, whether it involves family/domestic issues - such as adoption, guardianship, legitimation, child custody, child support, equitable distribution, post-separation support, and alimony - or estate planning.

My approach to family law is both compassionate and pragmatic. I believe in resolving conflicts amicably whenever possible, but I am also prepared to advocate fiercely for my clients in court when necessary. I prioritize clear and open communication, ensuring my clients understand every step of the process and feel empowered in their choices and decisions.
Originally from the greater Orlando, FL area, I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in 2009 and my Juris Doctor degree in 2012. I moved to Charlotte in 2009 and have proudly called it home ever since. Living and working in Charlotte has been an incredible experience—I love the constant growth and change, as well as the dynamic people and places that make this city special.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, staying active with my young daughter, and traveling.
